ᚱ · sound “r” · Ride, journey
Raidho (ᚱ) is rune 5 of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, in Freyr's aett. Its name means ride, journey.
A journey, literal or inner, moving at the right pace. Plans, travel and decisions fall into a healthy rhythm when you keep to the road.
Delays, disruption and a plan that will not hold. You may be stuck, or heading the wrong way at speed. Re-check the route.
Set your pace and keep moving.
Raidho comes from a root meaning to ride, the same one behind English "ride" and "road". Rune poems describe both the effort of a hard ride and the pleasure of a good horse, so the rune covers travel and the rhythm of getting somewhere. Its shape is close to the Latin letter R, which makes it one of the easiest runes to recognize.
Raidho usually shows movement with a purpose: an actual trip, a project moving along, or a stage of life. It is about doing the right thing at the right pace rather than about speed. In a spread it invites you to check whether your plan and your timing agree.
