ᚠ · sound “f” · Cattle, wealth
Fehu (ᚠ) is rune 1 of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, in Freyr's aett. Its name means cattle, wealth.
Wealth in motion: income, energy and opportunity are flowing toward you. Resources are meant to be used and shared, so put what you have to work.
Loss, stagnation or greed. Money or energy is leaking away, or is being hoarded until it goes stale. Look at what you are holding too tightly.
Circulate what you have; generosity keeps it alive.
Fehu is the first rune of the Elder Futhark and its name means livestock, and by extension movable wealth. In early Germanic society cattle were money, which is why the same root survives in English "fee" and in Latin pecunia. The rune opens the full alphabet carved on the Kylver stone from Gotland, dated to around 400 CE, one of the oldest complete futharks known.
Fehu is about resources in motion, not resources in a vault. In a reading it often points to money, work, energy or opportunity, and asks what you are doing with them. Drawn in a position about the future it suggests something arriving; in a position about the past it can show what you have already earned or spent.
