Gebo (ᚷ) is rune 7 of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, in Freyr's aett. Its name means gift.
A gift given and received in balance: partnership, generosity, a fair exchange. Bonds are strengthened both by giving and by accepting.
Gebo looks the same turned upside down, so it has no reversed meaning. It is one of the nine runes that read the same either way up, and it is always read as gift.
Give freely, and let yourself receive.
Gebo means gift, and the same root gives English "give". Its shape is a plain X, the same the other way up, so it has no reversed meaning. Old English rune poems keep it as gyfu, while the Norse poems of the Younger Futhark do not include it at all. Gifts in Germanic culture created bonds of obligation, and that idea of exchange runs through the whole meaning.
Gebo is about a fair exchange between two sides: partnership, generosity, a favor given and received. In a reading it is rarely about one person alone. Ask what is being offered, what is expected in return, and whether the balance feels right to both parties.
