ᚺ · sound “h” · Hail
Hagalaz (ᚺ) is rune 9 of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, in Heimdall's aett. Its name means hail.
A sudden storm: an upheaval outside your control that clears the ground. It hurts, but what it destroys was not going to last.
Hagalaz looks the same turned upside down, so it has no reversed meaning. It is one of the nine runes that read the same either way up, and it is always read as hail.
Shelter, wait it out, and plan what to rebuild.
Hagalaz is named for hail, which can destroy a harvest in minutes and cannot be argued with. The name survives in English "hail", and rune poems treat the rune as a cold and destructive force that also melts and passes.
Hagalaz looks alarming, but readers treat it as a clearing more than a curse. In a reading it shows a disruption you did not choose and cannot control, and asks what it clears away. Because the rune looks the same upside down, it has no reversed reading in this app.
