ᛖ · sound “e” · Horse
Ehwaz (ᛖ) is rune 19 of the 24 runes of the Elder Futhark, in Tyr's aett. Its name means horse.
The horse: steady progress made through trust and teamwork. A change of place or situation goes well when partners move in step.
Restlessness, mistrust or a poor fit. A partnership is out of step, or you are in a hurry to leave before you are ready.
Move together with those you trust.
Ehwaz means horse and is related to Latin equus. Horses were central to Germanic life and myth, from war and travel to Odin's eight-legged horse Sleipnir. The rune is shaped like two staves that lean toward each other, and later readers have taken that as two partners working as one, a rider and a horse.
Ehwaz is progress that depends on trust, whether with a partner, a team or your own body. In a reading it may mean a change of place, job or circumstances that goes well because of cooperation. Reversed, it can point to a breakdown of trust or a move that is being rushed.
