Braille Quiz

Braille is learned in three rows. Learn a – j first. k – t are the same shapes with dot 3 added. u – z add dots 3 & 6 (except w, which is j + dot 6).

The Braille alphabet

How to learn the Braille alphabet

Each Braille letter is a cell of up to six raised dots, numbered 1-2-3 down the left column and 4-5-6 down the right. The English Braille alphabet (Grade 1) is built in three rows of ten, so you only need to memorize ten shapes:

  • a to j use only the top four dots (1, 2, 4, 5). Learn these first.
  • k to t are the same shapes as a to j with dot 3 added: k is a + dot 3, l is b + dot 3, and so on.
  • u to z are a to e with dots 3 and 6 added: u is a + dots 3 & 6, v is b, x is c, y is d, z is e. w is the exception (j + dot 6) because it was not used in French, where Braille was invented by Louis Braille.

How the quiz works

Level 0 shows your name in Braille. Then each level shows 10 words written in Braille, and you type each word to move on. Levels 1 and 2 only use the letters a to j, levels 3 and 4 add k to t, and levels 5 and 6 use the whole alphabet. Odd levels have a cheat sheet, even levels don't. A timer measures how long you take, skipping a word adds 10 seconds, and your best time for each level is saved in your browser. Braille Quiz is free, works on phones and computers, and is meant for sighted people curious about Braille.
